Swimmer of the month
Adrenaline pumping while splashing her way through the water, Laurel Gill is determined to swim hard. Gill is a 16-year old La Jolla high school student who swims for both her high school, as well as the Wind 'N Sea Swim Team. At the early age of 8, Gill began competitive swimming with the Southwest Family YMCA Hurricanes in Minnesota. As a young girl, Gill bounced from sport to sport, as she has tried just about everything, from karate to figure skating to soccer; remaining a swimmer for the long haul. Gill exclaims, "Swimming is one of my favorite sports because I am a good at it and it is a lifelong sport, which will keep me in great physical shape!"
Not just a "JOCKETTE", Gill is also a National Honor Society Student, Vice President of her high school French Club, and a musician. She learned to play piano as a child and currently plays the violin. Gill is also a member of Model United Nations (political club) and plays on the high school golf team.
Anticipating her senior year, Gill is already looking at colleges; UCLA, UCSD, Harvard, UC Davis, and Stanford are among her top likes. As of now, Gill plans to swim in college. With Physics being the subject she finds most interesting, Gill would like to study Neurosurgery or Veterinary Medicine in college.
Breaking a minute in the 100-yd. butterfly is at the top of Gill’s priority list this swim season. Butterfly has been her specialty stroke since her youth, but she is also a strong sprint freestyle swimmer. Perseverance and determination have Gill leading the school of fish in the classroom and the pool!
